Taki blinked at Souna as the Athid a appeared, then giggled.

*I bet that's one thing the creator of that trap didn't think of!*

Thinking on it, no, I believe that was something my brother and I pointed out to our father as well. The Orb chuckled. Though it was our grandfather who put that one in, our father was rather put out with us for the comment, I recall!

Though some of the cracks in the stone were more deliberate, done with chisel and mortar in appropriate places to mimic naturally-cracked stonework, more damage told of destruction done over time. Without active residents in the manor it was possible that age had been the cause, combined with quakes, roots growing on the other side, and any other number of elements. Natural at least!

The IF apparently decided traps were enough to deal with at the moment, for Souna went and returned with little more than a little falling dust for the effort and a solution at hand. (Err, at wing!) Forward they trekked and promptly after a left-hand turn came to the gate the Orb had spoken of.

It stood a good two feet taller than Cain himself, a bit closer to a grate or portcullis than an actual door. Heavy bars made of iron and maybe something else - they were a bit too shiny-smooth to be pure iron - ran vertical from the ceiling into slots on the floor, and a glance at one home where the bar was a bit thin revealed it ran several inches deep into the stonework. They emerged from the ceiling likewise, from holes that had to be, well, at least as deep as the bars themselves were tall. Whatever mechanisms raised and lowered the bars was hidden in the stone that surrounded it.

And speaking of surrounding it, there were the runes that Cain had seen in his mind, as well as very similar runes meant to confuse those who didn't know exactly what to look for. Some were different by only a small margin, a line or two here and there, if even that.

Thinking outside the box often proved useful. And to be fair, not all athid companions could fly so there was that. It was one of those things that they just got incredibly lucky on. Not that he was going to question that any time soon.

The gate rose up and Cain was tempted to touch it. But he would rather not find out the hard way that it was set off to shock or that something equally vile had decided to be added to the metal. The runes were easy enough to find as he moved over to the wall. Making sure not to press against them, he did what he could remember of the pattern the orb had showed him before asking their guide to repeat it once more.

His fingers moved along but he still wasn't sure. He wished that Taki could also see the orbs images, but as it stood, there wasn't much he could there. He didn't trust Brains to get the images right and playing grapevine when some were so close like this was a dangerous idea. So instead, he had the orb repeat the pattern slowly and quite a few more times till he was confident he was right. Finally, after about two or five minutes, he gave Taki a teeth clacking. "Okay...Here we go. Might want to step back just a wee bit." With that, he punched in the pattern and hoped he got it right.

((Figured he has about an 80% chance of nailing it. Cain isn't exactly a fine detail person when it comes to things outside body language))

Taki actually was mid-motion to touch the bars, but then abruptly stopped and pulled her hand back, rubbing her fingertips.

*It's cold! Like really, really cold! Like that stuff that makes smoke and freezes things on contact?* She stepped back even before Cain advised it, ears back against her hat. *Brrr! I don't like it at all!* Hmm, it wouldn't feel that cold to Cain. Cold-Forged Iron, perhaps?

The Orb would patiently show Cain the images one at a time until he felt he had it, then it was go time! First one, then the others would be touched, lighting up as he did so, and upon pressing the last one Cain would feel a small, harmless but noticeable jolt through his fingers. The bars would rattle, and then raise slowly and with a grinding stone-on-metal sound.

They could pass through!

Taki would come forward when it was safe, though she would still be hugging herself and her fur fluffed and her ears back as she passed under. And as if the IF had been waiting for just this moment, when she (and Cain if he was with her rather than waiting or proceeding ahead) were right under it there would be a pained metal groan, a SNAP that almost reverberated in the breastbone, and the portcullis would come hurtling down!

Cain would have looked at her a bit oddly. It hadn't felt all that cold to him. Then again...It was iron (he didn't know about the cold forged part, at least not consciously) and last he knew, Taki could be classified as a fae. From where he had originally lived, fae and iron didn't exactly get along. So maybe that was it? Maybe. He would have to ask later.

"Ya mean liquid nitrogen? Possibly." He answered the question more absentmindedly than usual as he walked beside Taki under the gate. The sense of Death had suddenly gotten stronger and he was wondering if he had done something wrong when...SNAP!

Reacting purely on instinct, he tackled Taki about the waist, pushing them both through to the other side. Or so he hoped as the portcullis went crunch, snagging the back portion of his leg bone as it did so. Cain let out a hiss, though not so much in pain as what an idiot he was. He should have expected something like that considering how close to the cracks the old had been.

As he sent Brains over to get his bone, he lifted himself off of Taki. Concern flooded through him as he looked down at her. "Ya okay Taki? I didn't scrape ya too bad did I?" They had slid a bit on the floor and as Cain had tried to be on top to shield her from the gate, that meant Taki would have taken the blunt of that slide. Or her bag depending on how they had landed. Cain hadn't exactly been paying attention to that bit.

Taki gasped in shock from the impact, and when she heard Cain hiss she felt a surge of panic. Oh no! Cain was hurt! She lost her breath when they hit the ground and slid, but she barely felt it as she wanted to know if her friend was alright.

*I'm okay,* she answered hastily; she had a scrape on one arm, but her fur had protected her from more than a few tiny pinpricks. *Are you - Oh, your leg!* She saw the part that was snagged, which Brains was in the process of retrieving. *You saved my from getting squished and you got hurt because of it! Is there anything I can do?* While she'd seen Cain have to scrape crystal from his bones before, and knew he sometimes had to replace them, and that he could remove them on his own volition, she'd never witnessed what happened when one was damaged, nor could tell exactly how bad it was.

Moving to sit down beside Taki, Cain gave a nod. "Oh. Just fine. It didn't actually get bone." Lifting up his leg, he was messing his back leg bone, but otherwise, he was unhurt. "Just more like...Separated it from the rest of me." As Brains came over to deposit the bone beside Cain, he moved over to his intact leg bones. "See this space right here? Lucky it caught that and it just sort of...Pulled them apart." He demonstrated before putting it back together again. "No harm. No foul."

Reaching out, he gently tugged her hat. "While ya getting squished would have a lot more consequences." Finally putting his bone back in place, he flexed the joints there to get it back into alignment again. "Just have to sit here a minute or two and should be right as rain."

Seeing that the injury wasn't a full-on break below reassure Taki considerably. She smiled and adjusted her her after the tug - Cain certainly knew how much she enjoyed that playful gesture - and leaned slightly against his side while they rested.

*I'm really glad you're okay, and that I didn't get squished,* she murmured. *We got really lucky!*

I can agree with her there! the Orb spoke up, and there was a shaken measure to his voice. At the least I can assure you the next trap is much easier. A concealed pit, but there is a safe place to walk along the center. If you fall into the pit you won't be badly harmed beyond the fall itself, just trapped; it's some twenty feet deep. But there is a discolored stone near the top that marks either side of the pit, made to look line water damage. It's actually easy to spot if you're looking for it.

Well, that would prove to be an understatement. Once Cain was back up, they'd proceed down the hall and make a slightly descending turn. Taki would be sticking close to Cain, but soon it would seem she was seeking warmth more than just companionship. The Myrgwae had her arms around herself and was slightly shivering.

*Brrr! Maybe there's some kind of ice magic ahead?*

Only if the invader added it.

Cain would be able to notice the increasing chill, but it wasn't the kind of magic Taki believed. The presence of Death was very strong,

And ahead would be the pit, utterly revealed.

Taki shuddered and her ears pressed back against her hat, tail twisting in an uncomfortable loop.

*So much sadness!* she whimpered. *And scared!* She wouldn't be able to take another step close too the pit. But if Cain dared look in he would see something that likely only a few select individuals - such as a Servant of Death - would see: a ghost of a young demon-blooded woman, sitting half on, half in a pile of bones, likely her own. Her Ghost would be painfully thin and miserable, spectral damage to her leg showing that she'd seemingly fell and never made it out. Another soul trapped but the circumstances of her untimely demise.

And the Voice in the Orb would give a pained, choked sound in Cain's mind when he apparently perceived her.

My cousin....Ethalia.

Cain shook his head, grim in his tone as he spoke. "No...Though I wish the invader had added some ice magic." It would certainly be more comforting than the presence of Death. So strong here, someone had to have died fairly recently. Which didn't mean a heck of a lot. Sometimes recent was one hundred years and sometimes it was yesterday. Didn't help that this place held Death's presence like a lover. Cain immediately had to scrape that image from his head.

He stopped short as the pit laid before them, right in plain sight. "So much for having to play another I spy game." At Taki's words, he looked back at her, noticing how this place was affecting her. Kneeling down, he would give a gentle tug on her hat. "I'm going to go see what's in pit if there is anything. When it is safe to cross, I can carry ya if ya would like. Probably wouldn't weigh much than a sack full of bones since ya are all sunlight and air." He was teasing her lightly, trying to take her mind off what she must be feeling in the air around her.

Standing up and moving towards the pit, he didn't even hesitate to look down. Either the trap was set off by accident or something had set it off. Cain would very much like to know which it had been. The sight of the ghost at the bottom of the pit answered that question pretty well. Least she wasn't a firemane this time around. The orb helpfully supplied a name and a possible reason for how she had fallen for the trap.

Cousins probably didn't get the same lessons in the tunnel Orb and his twin had gotten.

He continued to stare down at her before sighing. "She isn't...Dangerous is she?" He would ask as quietly as he could. He didn't want to provoke the spirit if she turned out to be like the firemane, but if she wasn't...He just wasn't gonna leave her here either.
